The foundations of Viñedos Real Rubio began over one hundred years ago when the great grandparents of the current owners, Mari Luz and Javier, began growing grapes in the area around Monte Yerga in Rioja. Over the years their plots have grown and property expanded, to the point that the 90 hectares of planted vineyards are now home to most of the official varieties of grapes of the Rioja Designation of Origin – Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, Viura, Verdejo and Maturana.
In 2004, Mari Luz and Javier made the decision to move from just being grape producers to being wine makers, and thus the creation of Viñedos Real Rubio. Using solely their own grapes, their dedication and desire to maximise the legacy of their ancestors has resulted in a truly fantastic range of highly respected and award-winning wines from entry-level to fairly serious, all of which reflect elegance and balance commensurate with their market placement.
Hobros Limited are excited to be representing Viñedos Real Rubio and giving Mari Luz and Javier further recognition in the UK.
The headline act of the Viñedos Real Rubio range is this outstanding Rioja Gran Reserva, 2008, which even at its premium price is great value for money with respect to its quality. 74% Tempranillo is blended with 26% Graciano, the higher percentage of which gives greater focus, structure and forward fruit to the wine in comparison to the Crianza little brother.
Whilst the Tempranillo grape is the most well-known of the Rioja region and accounts for the vast majority of Spanish wine production, more and more wine makers are leveraging historical regional grapes such as Garnacha and Graciano to provide more focus and fruit structure to the typical vanilla and strawberry-led flavours of Tempranillo. Viñedos Real Rubio have taken matters even further and helped in the resurrection of the almost extinct Maturana Tinta grape (which has now been officially classified within D.O.Ca Rioja), culminating in the release of a sensational 100% Maturana Crianza.
This Crianza is the mainstay of the Viñedos Real Rubio range and is a blend of the most common Tempranillo grape balanced with the fortitude and focus of the Graciano grape. Great on its own or perfect with red meat, stews, charcuterie, smoked cheese and even punchy swordfish. This Rioja Crianza has mellow flavours of vanilla and red berries, backed up by well-structured tannins on the palate with a long decay.
This entry point to the red wines of Viñedos Real Rubio punches far beyond its modest price and is a great example of well-made, honest Rioja. Tempranillo is blended with Garnacha and produces a wine of intense colour with violet and purple hues to the fore. The wine is bright and lively, showing youthfulness with a well-defined backbone. The vineyard really translates cleanly into the bottle with very clear aromas of the two grape varietals – blackberry, raspberry, notes of herbs and a hint of coffee and vanilla from its modest maturation in American Oak.
Imagine a really great Antipodean Sauvignon Blanc full of crisp zingy fruit, then add the smoothness and mouthfeel of a good French Chardonnay - you have the Organic Rioja Blanco from Viñedos Real Rubio. Two organic grapes are used in its production – Verdejo and Garnacha Blanca – and together have produced a very intense and elegant white wine with explosions of lime, grapefruit and banana (!) on the palate, underlined by the herby vivacity of the Verdejo grape.
A lovely introduction to the white wines of Viñedos Real Rubio, this wine has been named after the vineyard owner Mari Luz and represents great value, honest, well-made and balanced wine. A beautiful gold colour and heady sheen introduces a crisp and clean nose, with soft and intense aromas of flowers and fruit on the palate. The mouthfeel is softer but balances crisp acidity with the minerality of the grape varieties.
This Organic Rioja Rose is made from 100% organic Tempranillo grapes, hand-picked and stemmed before a slow, painstaking vinification process. The result is a bold rose wine, salmon-pink in colour, showing liveliness and acidity supported by good depth of redberry, raspberry and strawberry flavours. Smooth and long on the palate with intense floral notes and excellent minerality.
This wonderful, summery strawberry lollipop Rioja Rose from Viñedos Real Rubio is made solely from Garnacha grapes, hand-picked from the stems at the beginning of October and cold-macerated in stainless steel vats. The result is a very aromatic wine of great intensity with roses and berries enhanced with a hint of tangerine citrus. Fruity in the mouth with a lovely acidity, the balance of the wine is harmonious and the finish long-lasting.
